FLOOD (Alt Rock Melodic 6/8 Goodness)

DogmaticVox

Meh...
Hey all, this track was on my last album with my band Strike the Design. I wrote this song and never thought the mix lived up to how I wanted it to be. So I revisited the mix and applied all that I've learned since I originally mixed it. I'm stoked on the results, but I'm also drinking my own Kool-Aid; so let me know what you guys think.

UPDATE: lowered cymbals and boosted vocals.

Thanks,
Garry

P.S. Here are the lyrics for those interested...

Close your eyes and hold the door shut
The cold will numb and dull your senses but we must stay sharp

All we know is gone
And the things we have left
Are only those close to our hearts

What if I wanted to change
But I've lost my way
Would you come find me again

The water is rising to free
All that's not tied down
The colors are turning to grey
Like you wanted to

What's pulled into the deep makes no sound
What sinks into the dark won't be found

The isles of rooftops are home to the dead
While vultures in love dance overhead

All we know is gone
And the things we have left
Are only those close to our hearts

What if I wanted to change
But I've lost my way
Would you come find me again

The water is rising to free
All that's not tied down
The colors are turning to grey
Like you wanted to

I hold your hands and kiss your face
Let's lie down and leave this place

(let the flood in)

All we know is gone
And the things we have left
Are only those close to our hearts

What if I wanted to change
But I've lost my way
Would you come find me again

The water is rising to free
All that's not tied down
The colors are turning to grey
Like I wanted to

You've got way more cymbal going on here than I'm a fan of.

The vocals are a bit buried and dark at times.

Otherwise, it's a solid mix. I like the subtle synth part.

Edited original post and uploaded the new version with clearer vocals and lowered cymbals (although Soundcloud still sounds like it's boosting them a little higher than they actually are).

Yup. That sounds better. Still a bit much ride on the first verse though.

I hear ya there. Unfortunately my drummer was set on using the "Glyn Johns Method" of only using 4 mics. So I only have a Kick, Snare, and two Overheads to work with. So I have zero separation for the most part. It was quite a culture shock for me coming from what I'm used to; at least 8 to 10 mics on a kit.

Might want to trim some of the lower mids on the snare (say around 150-250hz), and bump the 5-10k just a bit to give the snare some definition. It sounds very plain and thuddy.

I like the tone of the guitars and composition. Very solid recording. :)
