First track in years. Critiques please.

Hi, all. I used to be out here quite a bit years ago, but had to put music/recording on the back burner when I had kids. Now that they're finally getting old enough, I have some free time to start recording again...

So here is my first attempt in years -- and with some new gear to boot, specifically EZ Drummer for drums (vs my old BOSS drum machine) and a PODxt Live (vs the old 2.0). Still using the same soundcard (WaMi Rack 24) but am using Reaper now as my DAW. Let me know if there's anything else you wanna know.

Anyway, here are a couple links: one for SoundClick and one for direct download. The whole track is fair game -- mix, writing, performance, etc. -- just let me know what you think, what needs work, etc. Thanks in advance!

P.S. This was not intended as an instrumental. Vocals will (hopefully) be added at some point.

these sound like programmed drums...are they? sound good for what they are. maybe they need reverb or something....it sounds like they're just tracks that are panned...there's no overhead sound to them.

when the electric's kick in...sounds great. maybe slightly loud? they make the drums sound like they're in a different room.

all the tones are pretty perfect though

I'm really groovin' on this. I love the contrast between the heavy guitar riff and the clean/wah funk sound--great point counterpoint.

I like the drums, but agree w/cello--they need something to put them in the room with the guitar. Though since the guitar's modeled & not in the room, a light (ever so light) stroke of reverb on both at the same time might pull them together. (I often go light to none on individual tracks' reverb, then add a bit of room 'verb as I "master" the whole mix--can really help pull it together.

Okay--I went on too long about that, as it was really a nit. But I'd really like to hear more bass. At least I think so--I'll check again on decent speakers at home.

Nice job. Hope you're enjoying being back in the mix (pun intended).

Love the throaty tone on the guit in forefront(love the slide squeaks)...it meshes well with the cleaner toned one as a backdrop(which by the way reminds me of some 80s action porn background:D)...

The bass is awesomely deep and funky.

The drums sound good to me...EZ drummer eh? Works for me.;)

At first the throaty guit seemed a bit loud, but after listening a bit I think I like it the way it is...all out there and dangerous sounding.

Rock, Funk, Metal..what a combo...lovin it!!

Thanks for the comments, guys.

cello pudding: Yes, the beats are largely pre-programmed. I did some tweaking here and there, but not much (I got lazy when it came time to 'polish' the drums). And EZD has an overhead mic which has a great sound, but I couldn't bring it up without making the cymbals too loud. I also brought the 'room' mic down to tighten things up, so that may be a factor as well.

whitestrat -- I agree, especially since the guitars are completely dry (no reverb on the model or anything). I thought about trying to run the mix through a reverb buss, but I've never done that before and also had a hard time find a verb that I liked (something very subtle). Any suggestions?

true-eurt -- Thanks, man. Really glad you dug it. And yeah, the background guitar definitly has that sound about it... :)

killer track and great guitar sound. for my taste they dont need any reverb. its difficult enough and effective enough to get dry sound to sound so good :)

In the room needed for certain but otherwise this has some nice knife edge tones & a big bottom.
Cool!
