Fender Speakers

I have a Fender Twin (the "Evil Twin" as it's known) which in spite of its crappy red knobs (which I've replaced with black), has incredible tone and I love the amp.

I bought it used with Celestion G12-30 speakers in it. The tone is great in the mids and upper ranges but they crap out at the bottom end.

I just installed Celestion G12-70 watt speakers and they don't sound as good in there (too bright) and they crap out at the bottom end as well.

I tried a similar Twin amp in a music store which has stock Fender ("Special Design") 12" speakers, and they sound great and are tight at the bottom end.

Any amp/speaker specialists out there:

Could the problem be something else--possibly old tubes, or is this to be expected with the speakers I've been trying? I'm thinking the Fender speakers are the way to go but I also know older tubes can cause problems in the bass regions. Any troubleshooting ideas and recommendations?

Much appreciated.

Im not an expert but...

If I remember correctly, those Celestions are meant for a closed cabinet, thus using them in an open back cabinet would change the sound. The Fender "special design" speakers were made with an open back in mind. If you had an issue with tubes, I think you'd know it.

Crap! I just had a tube blow on by Pro Jr.

Oh well, off to the store!

Speakers designed for a closed box use air pressure inside the box as part of their suspension, in an open box they may be moving too freely. You could put the celestions in a seperate 2x12 closed cab I guess.

Well, test the theory - put that sucker up against a wall or tape a piece of plywood to the back and see if the tone improves at all. It's not the same as a real cabinet, but should illustrate whether you're moving in the right direction.
