Fan noise

So I was thinking of getting a Firewire device, but they're quite expensive compared to PCI cards with the same features. The reason I had pretty much steered away from PCI is that my PC is incredibly noisy, particularly the fan. Now I heard that this noise can be picked up by the soundcard somehow, so it will be heard in the recorded signal. Can anyone tell me if this is true and if it is really much of a problem?
I'm not concerned about mics picking up the noise, cause I won't have my instruments and computer near each other.

Thanks

Unless the fan is actually shorting out and emitting RF, it won't effect your sound card.

In any case, why not just replace the offending fan(s). At the very least, pull them out and give em a squirt of wd40
