Experienced Help Please - Is this True??!

I was told the other day that certain recording software programs have better recording quality than others!! ( while using the same sound card/converters)

This friend said that Sound Forge for instance has better recording quality than Cakewalk Sonar 3.

He said he tried recording a track to SOnar than recorded to SOund Forge..and the playback from soundforge was noticeably better quality!!!

How could this be true!!!?

Any comments welcomed.

I think it's basically bullshit. There probably is some measureable differences, but they will be very subtle provided things are recorded with good practices -- good signal, no clipping, etc. It's also possible that your friend did something "wrong" in SONAR that caused the file to sound "noticeably worse." There are so many possible things that one could do in either application that could distress the results, including poor use of processing features.

It's also erroneous to compare Sound Forge and SONAR since they are quite different beasts. SONAR is a multitracker; Sound Forge is a mono/stereo WAV editing program. You can't use Sound Forge for the purposes that you would use SONAR.

That's pretty much bullshit. Now some software have better summing algorithms than other but that's an intirely different subject. The biggest factor in sound is the quality of the A/D D/A converters and the stability of the clock source in your sound card.

If you want to drive yourself nuts worrying about the summing issue, take a look at the following:

Otherwise, as Track Rat says, there is plenty to worry about without trying to sort out DAW sound differences. The list is a long one:

Instrument quality
String condition
Performance quality
Room sounds
Mic quality
Mic technique
Preamp
Cable quality
AD converters
