Exactly how much to cut mid-lows?

I've know that clear up the low mud in a mix
you are to elliminate frequencies in the 200 or so
range. My question is by 'elliminate' do you mean
totally cut those freqs out of the kick, for example, or
do you just apply a cut? I have the Waves eq and
I was wondering if I should just drag those sliders
all the down when doing this?

Thanks for the help.

Cheetah,

It just doesnt work that way......
I wish every mix could be cleared up with a cut of mids.
A lot of the music is in the low mids as well.

Maybe your mix needs some boost in highs instead cuase it's dull?
Maybe you have masking problems and therfore it's muddy?.
Maybe the arrangment is to busy so it's muddy?
Maybe ...maybe.... there are a lot of reasons....

For the record.... a cut in this case means about 1-2 db and then you listen....not enough? you cut more...

What about the "Q" ? what freq exactly?.
It's just not that simple cutting low mids..........

Got it.

I understand. I was cutting way to much in
that area and it was becoming less musical.

Also, I want thank you and Sonusman and Blue bear and sjoko and everyone else for posting tons of very helpful info here.

Try this

Try this and see if it helps...
Cut just above or below 315hz on most of your tracks, hitting slightly different freqs on each track, then on the total mix, bring 315hz down about 1-2db and listen. Try this with a Q of around 2.5 Experiment... if a freq tends to hurt the instrument too bad bringing it down 2db, try a different freq in that area.
This cleans up that overly thick area sometimes. Sometimes it doesnt. Let me know what happens. :)

Worked great - Check it out.

Hey, Tubedude. Thanks. Your advice worked
very well. It opened everything up.

I have a question. I also had to remove some in
315 area for the final mix also. Why do you think
I have to again carve out some here if I already
did it while mixing?

If you want to hear the results you can listen

The song is called 'Giza". Let me know if you have suggestions for improvement.

Cheetah, I checked out you song... It was pretty cool. Your Sweeps are fast and sweet. "Giza" has a problem in the highs. It is too sharp and brittle. Also there arn't enough low's in the mix. But I must say, your guitar playing is great.

Good tracking, but... if you have a gate or something on those drums its killing me... its clipping too much tail too fast on cymbals, and the snare seems to be getting its attack clipped.
Good guitar playing, reminds of the old Yngwie days :) There was a day that I could do alot of that stuff.
A little more thump in the kick for me.

After 2:30 or so I dont hear that clipping sound anymore.

Thanks

Hey, thanks a lot for the critique. That info was exactly
what I I was looking for. I'll start tweaking it
tomorrow.
