E-mu Proteus X2

Do you have to have an Emu soundcard in order to use Emu Proteus X2 or is the MIDI interface included all I need? I already have a soundcard(tascam us-122) installed so will that work with the Proteus X2 to allow audio playback?

Thanks in advance.

Nicole, since the X2 is a software synth it can output its sounds to whatever sound card is in your system; however, a slower system may have more latency (delay between you hitting a key and hearing it come out the speakers) than you can stand for playing real-time.

The x2 prefers to use ASIO drivers but can apparently use the Microsoft Directsound driver - I'm not sure if that's on the CD-Rom that comes with X2 or not, but you should be able to find it at the Microsoft site.

The included MIDI interface will let you plug a keyboard controller into your computer to play the sounds from X2 - if your keyboard also has sound generators inside, you could also hook the output of that keyboard into a mixer (along with your computer's sound card output) and get BOTH sounds to play thru speakers/amplifier connected to the mixer.

Here's the quick start

and full manual

for the X2 - check out page 10 of the quick start for more on your question, but remember - Emu wants to sell you a sound card, so they don't wanna tell you you can use someone else's sound card; they just don't tell you you CAN'T.

HTH... Steve

Yeah i just found out that the included MIDI interface will allow me to use X2 without a EMU soundcard. One of the reps from EMU told me my Tascam US-122 would work fine with it.

Thanks for responding to my question though.
