Drums & Dynamic processing

Hello,
I would like to get an advice on what DP to get to record my drum set.
I have a double bass drum + 6 toms kit, and including snare, HiHat and 2 overheads, I have a total of 12 mics.
I plan to record these on 8 tracks, using 4 directs out and 4 subs (probably putting 2toms/2toms/2timpani/2overhead).

The question is: do I need a compressor/expander/gate on each channel? That would total up to 8 channels (subgroups have insert). Would you recommend any other set-up?

Any help is appreciated.

What are you recording on?
If your using a DAW you can use the software for dynamic processing.

Definitely.
Or if not, a stack of hardware.

Hey robo, what kind of music are you recording? I would suggest getting the best sound you can dry/no time based or dynamics processing. If needed use them in mixing. I would find it very difficult to figure what to use on which mic without hearing the mix.
