Drum machines/stereo output/instrument levels

Hi,

this is a question about getting the best sound out of a drum machine which has only a pair of stereo outputs, particularly about the relative volume levels of kick drum and snare. I set all levels by ear but can't make up my mind about kick and snare. Usually, I've had the snare on max. volume (i.e. 30) and the kick 2 or three points lower (27 or 28). Does this seem right or should the kick be at the same vol. as the snare? Or should it be much quieter. I assume the answer to that is it varies from song to song, but I'd like to hear what other people do. I've also been routinely shelving at 200Hz or 100Hz to get rid of boom. I'm wondering if that's the right aproach as well, or whether I should leave it. Bit of a dopey question, but any help appreciated.

Thank you

Cant say what volume setting to use without hearing it. For maximum flexibility try recording the snare and bass hits on individual tracks.

If cutting the bass sounds better than your probably doing the right thing.
