doug pinnick's sound(king's x)??????

Ah yes, a GREAT sound it is....

90% of it comes from the fact that he plays an 8 string bass (much like a 12 string guitar, in that it has an octave string for each string, dig?)

...just a touch of chorus and maybe a little flange.

The only manufacturer I am aware of that makes eight strings is Zon. and they retail around $3000 US. You may have to look into having one custom made....

....that is of course unless someone else knows where you can find a *cheaper* one.

Hope this helps.

damn that was fast

thanks a lot for the speedy reply. Well do you think I could use a..whatchacallit..an octive thingy or harmonizer or..you know. I use my bass for recording only and use direct inject into my nixer. I'm going to start looking for some sort of rack effect dedicated to each instrument ( drums, bass, guitar, vocals and ornaments. For now all I have is an old rp1 and an rp7. my new joint has a pretty good harmonizer thingy that sounds good on my ax, but I don't not used to doing much with the bass. What do think?..

Some may agree, some may not...

Personally, I went and bought a digitech BP-8. Best purchase I ever made. It's a tube and solid state effects floor pedal, identical to the rp series, except designed specifically for bass. Has a programmable waahhhh pedal too. Has just about every effect you could possible need for bass. The octave effect works very well (although doesn't compare to the real thing ;) ) Check your local music store, and see if they've got a demo you can try out.

I love mine, even used it for guitar to get a REALLY big and FAT sound.... and my friend who has a full studio experimented with it for vocals, and it worked quite well as well.

I bout mine for about $600 canadian, so that's like about $2 american, i think :p

Good luck

Nope...

Actually, Doug plays a Hamer Chapperal 12-string bass. Yeah, you read that right, a 12-string bass. You can find them from time to time on Ebay, they usually go for around $1200 or so. I think new they run $1700, but I may be short changing it by a few hundred.

You can buy an 8-string bass, there are several manufacturers out there including Rickenbacker, Fernandes, Ibanzez used to make one, and I know that I've seen old Kramer 8-strings. In addition, if you're feeling particularly spunky, you could try your hand at building one yourself by buying the bridge, tuners, and neck at Warmoth. Here are the links for everything...

Doug Pinnick......

When I saw King's X (my ears are still ringing) it looked like Doug was using the SVT preamp by Ampeg, with 2 cabs...couldn't see the power amps.He has run through guitar amps too (Marshall,I think)for the distortion on top of that great SVT low end.Once in a while when King's X songs fade out to just bass and drums you can hear this mix.It works well with a power trio,as the distortion is there just enough to blend with the guitar.
