heres an andther method. try using 2 mics at once. sm57 about 3 inches away from speaker 30 degree off axis, then use a different mic preferably a condensor mic 3 to 5 feet away about 1foot above cab. eq each mic differently pan hard left and right.after you have recoded them run seperate delay units on each one. run about 30 millseconds of delay on one, and 40 on the other. these times are varible up to 70 millseconds( approx.)then send themm threw a reverb unit. this way you are recording in stereo, and the delay will give you clarity.

A couple of things I've had good luck with is A 57 on the speaker about half way between the cone and the surround and a pair of AT4033's about 8' back and around 3' 6" high. Now the position of the distant mics depends on the room and where the amp is setting in that room. You just have to walk around the amp and listen for where the sweet spots are. Pan the 57 up the middle and the 4033's left and right.
Another beauty is the same SM-57 in the same position on the speaker and a GT AM-52 (it's what I have) in figure of 8 pattern back about 4' with the pick up pattern looking to the left and right of the amp. Classic mid/side mic'ing. Again the 57 is panned up the middle and the figure 8 track you split and feed to two channels on the mixer, invert the phase on one of those tracks and pan 'em left and right. This collapses to mono well also.
