Do you guys run out of memory too?

Hi,

I just wanted to know if you guys run out of memory too.
I'm using Cool Edit Pro with 256 DDram. I use a SIV
hardware monitor. When I start, with all background
apps in the msconfig off, except sys. tray and scan registry
the reading on available physical memory is about 220,000 KB.
The max available is about 260,000 KB. How do I reclaim some
of the remaining 40. I havent run out when using Cool
Edit yet. But after 2-3 hours of internet with Norton
Antivirus and Firewall on, I check the reading and it's
about to run out. So if I use Cool Edit 2-3 hours, does this
mean I have to restart when the memory runs out every time.
Is there a solution to this. Any secret tweaks you could recommend to save on the memory. Does this happen to you?

thanks.

Man you just gotta stop staring at that thing. While you use the internet the ram is maximizing the potential of the hard disks by swapping or saving info(web pages, pics) to RAM. The amount you have is fine for a win 98 computer. That "extra 40" is windows.

The main thing is cool edit works smoothly right?

Thanks for the speedy reply Jake-Owa,

I was losing sleep over this for some time. Thanks again.
You're right, the important thing is CEP workds without
a glitch. Hope to run into you sometime in the forum again.

No prob, just never open those monitors until something starts going wrong. It'll get ya thinkin' too hard.

Next time.:)

well if you know about msconfig you probably know about setting your virtual memory..but just in case!
I would set my virtual memory to 256/256 for the minimum and maximum. I believe you are using 98 correct? if so then also change your computer hardware profile to network server..for some reason that makes it work more efficiently. all of these settins are found by right clicking on my computer and going to properties..there is a performance tab i believe..:P

Thanks for the last few responses guys,

I might get 512 in the future if I decide to get into
soft synths, but not for now. I've tried switching to
network server but it even cuts the avilable physical memory
after just rebooting to a lesser value. I haven't messed with the
virtual memory settings, I have 256 dd ram, and I read in some
famous article that you should set minimum and maximum to twice
the amount of ram you have, I don't know if this is a good idea.
I'm also confused about the values to enter for virtual memory,
is 98 asking for KB or just plain MB. The default value is about 17,000 something, so I'm thinking K bytes equivalent of 256 MB?

I'll probably be temted to tweak this sometime in the future
but for know I think I'll go with Jake-owa's and Slackmaster's advice ( Slack's usually right about these things. ) and go
back to my recording until some problem comes along. Thanks
to you all.

Leave it on "server". Get RAM when you can. There is no need to mess with the virtual memory.

Have fun recording, not worrying. I'm gonna try to take that advice too.;)
