The main thing is to just start doing it. Set stuff up, hit record and see what you get. Start building tracks, play with it, nuke it and start over if it's a mess. The more you work with your system, the better you'll get

Use what you have, see what you can do with it, learn to overcome obstacles with what you do have, and then move on to gear that you've identified as being needed to get you to the next phase you want to be at.
