I've heard that 'butterfly' was originally 'flutterby' (which makes more sense), but got changed over time by the majority enjoying to flip it around for fun. Don't know if that's true.

The English language does get wacky.

Harvey,

I always thought the word gobo was short for go-between. A gobo in the lighting world is a pattern that "goes between" the lens and the light source.

Of course, I may be wrong, but it sounds good.
