I record on a digital work-station but do a lot of editing on my computer with audacity. I am using a Dell inspiron 531s. I have been using line out into mic in on the front panel. It doesn't sound as good as when I listen to it directly from the 8-track. Is there a better way to get tracks onto the computer? Please respond.

Sure. Either a PCI card or outboard audio interface.

depends on what the available outputs are on that unit... does it have any other than the analog outs???

Still using a built-in soundcard?? Unfortunately, those are made with less than 50-cents worth of chips for beeps, boops and light gaming (not to mention cheapness for the manufacturer) and NOT quality music production.

#1 Rule of Recording: You MUST replace the built-in soundcard.

Here's a good guide and suggestions: http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards_for_the_home_studio.htm

50 cents? I think you're grossly overestimating the cost of the parts. :D
