Digi 001 and ADAT

Greetings,

This may be too advanced for the newbie section, but too basic for the recording section.

I know the basics of digital PC based recording, but one thing I have never understood is the use of ADAT as additional I/O.
I know Digi 001 always sites an ADAT as an addition 8 channels of I/O. Question.

Would it be used as a collection of tracks that you have previously recorded and then mix down to your computer?
Or is it something that plays and records back in real time when you are laying down tracks to your PC?

Basicly, I have always thought of ADAT as either a stand alone 8 channel system, or apparently as storage of mastered/mixed material.

How does it fit in as "additional" I/O?
