cubase or cakewalk ???

ok, im about to enter the relm of computer based recording !! (finally). i was wondering if i can get some advice on which programs to use , soundcards and so on.i have a gateway with a 400 pent. 2,128mb ram and 10 gig hard driveany help would be most grateful ! thanks folks !
 
All of these programs have different strengths and weaknesses. What do you plan on recording, just real instruments or is MIDI a concern? Provide a little more info and I'm sure someone can help. BTW, you should add Vegas Pro to your list of software to compare.. www.sonicfoundry.com
