Convolution Verb Impulses questions...

Hi -

I've been messing with SIR for a few hours with some impulses from Voxengo...it sounds awesome.
The thing is - if I'm recording a 24/44 project and use an impulse with 16/44 resolution, will it actually degrade my audio?
And where can I get some great 24 bit impulses from?

Thanks!
Jeff

hi Jeff,

The SIR uses at least 32 bit(floating point) internal calculations (like most VST Plug ins) to calculate the reverb from the impulse response and your send-mix to the SIR. so it's output wil still be 32 bit even if you use a 16 bit impulse response. However the outcome of this calculation will be (slightly)different if you use 16 bit version or a 24 bit version of the same impulse.

I personally A-B'ed a 24 bit impulse against that same impulse only then dithered to 16 bit and i didn't hear much difference, but you might wanna try for yourself. i haven't got any hesitation in using a 16 bit impulse in a 24 bit project.

if your looking for a lot of good impulses you might wanna try noisevault.com it's a website dedicated to convolution.

greetings,

Thomas
