Connecting a Mic to a computer?

Hey everyone,

I am trying to decide if I should buy a stand-alone multitrack digital recorder or if I should use the Cakewalk Home Studio program I bought awhile ago.

I would like to save money, as $450 for the recorder, mic, cables, windscreen, stand, and headphones is a big decision for me.

Is there anyway to connect a Shure SM57 mic to a regular microphone jack on the back of a computer? It would enable me to buy the mic, necessary cables, and desktop stand only without shelling out the extra money.

If anybody knows how to do this, please let me know.

No you should not.

The mic-in jack has a 20-cent chip only good for those $3 stick mics, not recording music. You will need a preamp (Audiobuddy or small Behringer mixer with preamps at the very least) and plug the outputs into the LINE-IN jack on your soundcard.

And go to Amazon.com and type in "Home Recording" in the search bar and get yourself a $20 beginner book on recording, too.... (it will save you much money in the long run no matter what type of system you end up with.)
