Confused by waveform

You can see in the attachment that the waveform only crosses -6 on the bottom and not the top. At first I thought this was DC offset but it isn't. What is causing this? I'm digitizing a book on tape and the first 3 hours all looks like this.

nah, doesn't look like DC offset to me. the silent parts are at zero and there are some smaller peaks/dips that look just fine.
I wouldn't worry about it as long as it sounds okay. It's probably just the way it looks during that moment in the wave.

Not all waveforms are symmetrical. Drums, for example, often have that shape. I haven't seen it with VO stuff, but then I haven't seen much of that, so there you go.
