is the fastest attack setting .01 or 1000.00.

I'm doing vocals, and I keep reading use the fastest setting but which way is fastest?
 
What you're looking at is probably milliseconds - .01 milliseconds (one one-hundreth of a millisecond) and 1000 milliseconds (1 full second).

i.e. .01 is shorter. HOWEVER, knowing that, play with it and find YOUR favorite setting.

Agreed. Faster might not be "better". Listen to both extremes... change the speed slowly and try and hear the difference. You may have to overdo the rest of the compression settings to hear the obvious differences, then pull back on them too...

Compressors can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on how they're used. I'm sure I'm not alone when I mention that during my first experiments, I totally ruined records by misusing a compressor.
