Compression Depression

I'm confused and I feel like I'm missing out big time in not knowing this.

I had a friend over the other day and he was trying to explain to me the intricacies of compression. He didnt have much time to get into it so I was wondering if i understood. I got the idea that if you record with enough compression it's almost impossible to distort the sound? In other words, one can record on hotter levels? I have yet to mess around with the compression settings (attack, sustain etc..) I just leave it on the default setting of my recorder. What do I have to know before I start messing around?
Can compression be added both before recording and after?
What the whole thing with the ratios?
Do the compression settings vary from singer to singer?
In other words when a singer with a huge voice (celine, whitney) goes into the studio , do the engineers use the same amount of compression in all their vocals , for every song?

Thanks for any answers or links to articles I can read to gain more insight.
