Cheap backing strings (Yamaha PSRE-403?)

Folks, I have a special need: a very basic 61-key synth with built-in sounds, under $300.
I'd like to buy it new, if possible--I've been unlucky with used gear.

I'm a guitar-player/composer, producing jazz-rock stuff that sometimes needs some simple backing string and synth parts. I've actually survived, with some good airplay, using a cheap older Casio, whose technology is dated. A buddy of mine told me that this Yamaha board is pretty useable--for low-impact background parts--after some careful tweaking.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's had any experience with it or with something similar.

Thanks,
Jeff

I've got one of these, and yeah. The sounds are very usable, and tweakable. You can adjust attack/release, reverb/delay, chorus, and more very easily and intuitively to get the sounds you need.

I'd definitely recommend it for what you're talking about doing!

Are you just recording or are you taking it with you? If you're just recording, get a softsynth.

You can orchestrate with GPO and, if you spend some time at it, convince someone you brought in your local symphony orchestra. If you don't need that much(which it doesn't sound like you do), there are tons of choices out there. And if you want something comparable to a PSR, I'm sure you can find something free. Just do some searching on www.kvraudio.com

If its just for recording, and you have a sequencer, it might be worth looking at some soundfonts. I managed to find some really nice soundfonts for strings, orchestral stuff, choirs etc. Seemed to sound better than synths to me. Of course I was on a budget of £0.00. But for free these things are pretty good if you find the right ones.
