Cable Question???

Ok... so there's speaker cables, guitar cables and mic cables? Is there such a thing as a specialised line level cable? From what I can gather there isn't... you just use mic cables? I could be wrong... I have no idea... that's why I'm asking.

Basically I wanna get some good cable for mic and line level applications and wanna know if it's all the same stuff or do I have to get two different kinds... RE is happy with his Canare Quad Star so I'll try and get some of this... if not then Belden, Mogami etc...

Only one small difference....

Generally, there is only one difference between mic cable and line level cable, and that is the type of shielding that is used. Mic cable uses a braided shield, which is more expensive to make, and doesn't shield as well as the other type, which is foil type shielding, which is a better shield, but doesn't hold up to being bent and coiled up, and twisted like a mic cable would be used.

So, you can get usually the same type of cable (brand and model type) in either braided or foil shields. The foil shield stuff is a little cheaper, and should be used for interconnections that are not going to be moved around a whole bunch. Get braided shielding for all mic cable as is will hold up much better.

And Monster SP1000 is still the best sounding stuff I have heard....:D

It's probably worth just getting some cable with a braided shield at the moment then, because my gear isn't exactly a permanent fixture... until I get a computer dedicated for audio, my gear will always be getting set up and taken apart. :(

Thanks Em... thanks Ed...

Well.....

Coop, really, if you are not twisting up the cable and banging it around like you would mic cable, the foil shield stuff will hold up quiet well. It is not like the shield is going to break the first time you move it, or even the 100th time. It is just not made to be constantly moved around like braided shielding is.

Save a few bucks, and make your soldering job easier, get the foil shield for interconnections.

Ok guys... I've found a Canare stockist in my area... he's quoted me L4E6S at about 80c/ft (converted for you US folk) Does that sound reasonable? I'm gonna get some black cable and some coloured cable... what's the coolest colour it comes in? I can't tell much about the colours at the canare website. Not only has it gotta sound good... it's gotta look good too :D

Well

For some reason, it seems I paid something like around $365US (maybe it was almost up to $400US?) or so for a spool of 1000' from Full Compass http://www.fullcompass.com And it seems for a spool of 500', it was something like around $0.45/ft. I'd have to check when I get home.

And this place I saw on the net is selling it for $0.60/ft or $0.55/ft with a min. of 100'. http://www.gatewayelex.com/audcable.htm

Doesn't seem you're getting much of a deal...

RE... that sounds about right actually... we get MAJORLY ripped off here in Australia... generally we pay about 1.5-2 times the amount for music stuff that you guys in the US pay.

I've just found out that the idiot I talked to only sells it in 300ft spools... I only want about 100ft to try out. He's told me to go to this other place which he thinks will sell me 100ft... so I have no doubt whatsoever they'll be more expensive :(

Thanks for the offer RE, but it's not really a big deal... I'm gonna go check out what this other store has tomorrow as well as my "regular" store to see what they've got in at the moment - they are usually pretty good at cutting me a good deal.
