Budget Condensors: MXL 990 vs. Nady SCM 900

hey folks!

i'm trying to figure out which (budget) condenser mic to buy...i was on the cusp of ordering the MXL 990 (from musician's friend), when i read some reviews complaining that the shockmount is cheap and doesn't work well:

so i started poking around a bit more...and found the Nady SCM 900:

which with this:

ends up being the same price (and the shock mount seems to be more stable)...both mics have good reviews (considering the price of the mics) and to be useful for similar things (I'm most interested in micing acoustic instruments (esp. guitars) and vocals).
can anyone shed some light on this? which would you get?

The shockmount for the mxl990 does what it's designed to do. It isolates the mic from vibrations. The swivel joint is a little hard to get tight enough. The tension band seems to hold the mic just fine. That's my experience with it.

I don't own the Nady so I can't comment on it.

I have a SCM900. It works OK as drum overheads on a kit with bright cymbals, or for vocals, it is very rolled-off in the treble and lacks presence. The MXL990 is probably a better acoustic guitar mic.

Either one would probably work for you. If I had to choose, I'd try the MXL990.

I own both and would choose the MXL 990 just about every time. The SCM 900 is the worst sounding condenser mic I own. The 990 does a good job on acoustic and is usable on vocals.
