Bring Back Transfat!
Ant $300-$400 recommendations? I think the Artcores are ugly. I kinda dig the Jay Tursers and Konas, but don't know anything about them.

If I had the bucks, I'd grab a Gibson Brydland like Nugent's.

I've got one of those artcores, I like it. Single cutaway, two humbuckers, etc. Looking for this pic, I saw prices under $300.

Not that I'm trying to defend the artcores, I just thought this particualr model was different than the others I've seen.

See, yours has a finish I haven't seen on any recent offerings; just the moddled brown, and black. How much for yours? :D

The artstar is slick too, but I want sumthin FAT.

You could check out some Epiphones, but I think they're going to be somewhat higher than your price range. I think their ES-175 might fight the bill, though I think you're looking for something bigger.

Hadn't even thought of this one. I can bump the budget a bit...goin' for it. MF's doing 15% off on orders over $700 today (xmas), and I'm needing a few more drum mics and misc junk anyway. Good call buddy. Thanks! :)

For new hollowbody guitars in that pricerange, there are very few alternatives. Once you rule out Ibanez Artcore, you are left with Epiphone. The ES175 if you like humbuckers, and the Wildkat if you like P90's. I use a Casino, but it is not quite a jazz guitar. Of the two above, I prefer the Wildkat, and this is why- first, I don't like Artcore either, but for a different reason than you. I don't like them because they are made in China, and sound like they are made out of cardboard. The fit and finish is excellent for the pricerange, but the tonewood is more like toneless wood. I judge a hollow body guitar by what it sounds like when it's not plugged in, and every Artcore I've played sounds like a dead rat.
The Epiphones are made by Samick in Korea, and the fit and finish is not as good, but they sound better. Why the Wildkat instead of ES175? Because the humbuckers on Korean Epiphones *suck*, but the P90's are not too bad. If you are planning on replacing the pups anyway, it doesn't matter. I own a Korean Epi Les Paul which is a *great* guitar, but the pickups had to be replaced with classic 57's, which is half the price of that guitar, give or take. The P90's on my Casino are no problem, and did not require replacement. But I will say this- due to fit, finish, and QC issues, I wouldn't buy any of these cheap hollowbodies without playng it first. I had to go through about half a dozen Casinos before I found one that wasn't screwed up in any major way.-Richie

Hey Grip,

Merry Christmas mate.

Like you I wanted a full on jazz beastie so being adventurous, as time and money allows, I'm doing a lutherie course and making my own archtop BUT it's costing $$$.......$300 for the top plate Spruce, the back and sides will be d'ble that (at least), etc., etc., but it will truly be mine :D

Chris

PS: I might end up in SC sometime this coming year.......our company is opening a plant there and I may have to go over and train people..........maybe.

Damn buddy, long time, no hear! :D

Lotsa sweat and $$$, but like you said, it'll be uniquely yours. Good on ya. Got any pictures thus far?

I went ahead and grabbed the ES-175 from MF. Not a Byrdland, but I wanna stay married a while longer! ;)

Gimme a holler if you know you're gonna be in SC. With a couple weeks notice I can plan a visit.

Merry Christmas. Hope you and your family are all good. See ya. :)
