Beyer M88TG

Just bought a Beyer M88TG used, for about $150. Should arrive next week. :) As I understand, this mic is good for vocals, brass, kick & guitar amp, and I will try it out on all of those.

Does anyone know anything else this mic is good for ?

its a good enough mic to try on almost anything.

it has some pretty serious proximity effect that can make it good for bass drum and cabs. roll it off if you dont like it, or back the mic up a little bit. the nice thing about hypercardiods is that they can stand to be a bit further from the source without so much leaking or room verb.

the main thing that makes this mic interesting is it has this uh... juicy?... characteristic to it. you hear it most on vocals, beefs up the bottom and the top. the top is smooth and present- not very exacting, but very pleasing. anyway, it it an exaggeration mic. you'll see.

try it on anything. it just might work.

I thought you guys "across the Pond", could score stuff like the Beyer's, Sennheiser's, Neumann's :D, etc. for good prices.

Not true?

If you back off it enough, the M88TG sounds quite "natural" on
vocals IMHO.

yea, but i would describe it as "hyper-natural". its that juicy top. when i head it up against say a 441, it is very different. for my voice way better. the 441 gives me my voice warts and all, the m88tg makes me sound awesome!

Well, okay. But I've never been able to find an M88 for $150.

Eel, I totally agree with your assessment of the M88TG's "sound".

The other knock-out for me has been the Electo-Voice EV 666 for a warm vintage ribbon style sound, ala RCA 77DX/tube pre.
You have to be a bit of a gambler with that one, no way to repair them anymore. (EV has no parts and no service support)

Haven't had the pleasure of using the 441 yet though.
