In the interest of saving money, how comparable are softsynths, or soundfonts built from samples, to a good module, say TD5 or even TD10?

Can you simply buy a softsynth with good drums sounds ready to go? Is it better to use a soft-sampler and accumulate a bunch of samples and build a "soundfont"(not even sure what a soundfont is. I've just read alot and kinda have an idea).

Of course, a module can be played live and....
