First off, you'll probably get a thousand different recommendations. 
Mic selection is a very passionate subject with almost as many opinions as there are people.
Second, we'll assume street price for new mics here, though you can get good mics used for cheaper.
This is just slightly above your price range, but I might start of my list with a Neumann TLM 193. A quality condensor that handles guitar amps almost as well as the quiet stuff. Smack dab in the middle of that range I'd think about a Royer 121 ribbon mic for studio applications where it can be taken care of.
