So far it looks like I am being limited by the price of the suggestions you guys have. I really only have like 200-250 at the very very most to spend right now.

I know I have read several times that usb interfaces slow down your computer, but does anybody on here use them?

If I have a P4 1.8 ghz machine with 1.5 gigs of ram and a pretty clean install would it run something like a M-audio fast track pro? I just read an article in recording magazine and it said that newer computers are fast enough to use usb effectively and that usb has many less compaability issues than firewire. It said that firewire devices are "dumb" devices that will work with all windows machines.

Anybody have an comments/suggestions/experience with this?

As I said earlier I don't do anything really fancy. No more than 10-15 tracks with some effects on them and never more than 2-3 lines running in at the same time. I currently borrowed an M-audio 410 firewire device that works pretty well. Sometimes I have to restart my machine but it is lightyears better than the alesis.

Also, other really good entry level interfaces are the Echo Audiofire2's and 4's.
