Okay here's the deal. My dad gave my sister his old 1952 Gibson LG-1. She never plays it because it has a HUGE crack that runs along pretty much the entire bottom side of the guitar. I've talked to her about letting me have it so I can fix it and play it. She said that she would trade me for an electric guitar and an amp.

So, This guitar is gonna cost me at least $200 to fix. I'm not too anxious to spend a lot of money on a guitar and amp becuase that just adds to that cost.

In your opinion, What is the best cheap electric guitar package out there, or simply just the best cheap electric?

Here are some options I've been looking at:

- Behringer V-tone II pakage
- Kramer package from Music Yo
- Epiphone Les Paul Junior

At this point I think I am leaning toward the Behringer. I've played the little amp is comes with and the analog modeling and the switches on it sounded pretty cool. Anyone played the Behringer guitar?

Thanks for any input!!

I think Ibanez has a starter pack that would be much better than the Behringer. I haven't played the Behri guitar but i can't imagine it's any good.

oh, yeah....

One thing I thought I should mention......

I do have a spare electric guitar that I use as a back-up. As soon as I have the ca$h to buy my dream electric - Gibson Les Paul Standard Limited Edition in Manhattan Midnight - I'll be giving my back up to my sister. Its a Ibanez GAX-70 upgraded with Pickups from a 1995 Gibson Les Paul Standard

I still the the Berhinger kit has the best amp..........

I have an Epiphone Special II and I'll say that is a sweet playing gutiar for the price. You can't go wrong with Marshall and the MG10CD Combo Amp runs around $70.00. That's $219.00 with the Epiphone Special (Black) throwing in $10.00 for a cheap gig bag it's a good deal. (Most new guitars already come with a cord and you can talk the store into a cleaning cloth, picks etc...)

Don't forget about the Squire packages either. Most stores will let you try out the practice amps that come with the packages. I'm not up on how the package amps sound, so I can't tell you there.

I went with the Behringer V-tone II package.

I am in my 30's but I started with one and got one each for my children. They have worked well, they were reviewed well before I bought and the price was low. They are very light to carry which might be a factor. I am not saying they are great guitars but I believe you are getting the same thing for $100 that costs $200 + with the other starter packs.

Does anybody have an opinion on the Johnson JS-850?

I've looked for reviews, but haven't found any. I've searched this board for opinions on their guitars, and invariably every post asking about any of them has gotten zero replies.... :D

I started out on a squier strat pack for about 200 dollars. The guitar was great, I still use it sometimes. The amp wasn't as good, but you could get very usuable clean tones from it. I'd definitley reccomend it, but I'd say play the guitars before you buy them because quality control isn't always the best on cheaper guitars (or exspensive ones for that matter).

Here's another way to look at a "cheap guitar package"

So you wanna be a cheapskate with your sister, but still give her something you won't feel too embarrassed about? Something you might even enjoy playing yourself? And you lust for a Les Paul too?

Yeah, I do feel kinda like a bum for cheapskating my sister.... At least I know that the Behringer pack will give her a good amp. When she was going to buy an electric a while back, I recommended that she buy that amp. I was quite impressed by it, and have been tempted to buy one to kick around a few times.

I guess the issues are really, how much I am willing to pay for my dad's old guitar. The answer is not more than $300 at the moment. I still need to have it looked at. My dad doesn't think it is worth fixing - he says the fretboard is too scalloped and it will never play well again. I'll see what a proper luthier has to say about that!!

So far I've heard that it will be $100 to repair the crack. And it will be about $60 for new tuners... I'd still need to have a lot of work done seting up becuase the bridge has lifted over the years... And even then, will it sound good? Who knows?

Oh boy, do I lust for a les paul!! That finish (manhattan midnight) is the most beautiful finish I have ever seen!! You guys have GOT to check it out -

As soon as I get that guitar I can part with my old trusty Ibanez... That and the amp would be a good trade for a near worthless (other than sentimental value) guitar....

Ibanez and Washburn have both got a pretty good starter pack for under $150, guitar, amp, gigbag, cable, tuner, pick, intro book/CD. Is something like that what you have in mind?

I have a hell of a package for ya, but it's not electric and its not cheap. :)
I have one for your sister to. :)
Seriously ;)

Hey, Brother :)
Your situation kinda' got me thinking.... The thing is that it looks like it involves some other aspects... not just related 'directly' to the question "what starter-pack is the best".
So after thinking about the whole thing.. here's what I think I would do... well, as much as I can relate to your situation.
First of all set the maximum amount you can (or are willing) to spend on the guitar for your sister - the guitar ONLY!, no amp, no picks, mo extra freakin' straps nor other cheap useless junk ;) ) .... So you would calculate this way:
Let's say you can total spend $250...and not a cent above it. Then deduct the amount of cash that you'll have to spend on any small practice amp, which you think is pretty good from your experience... Let's say the amp is $80, then you have $170 max for the guitar
Next thing: Take you sister to local music instr. store and tell her: " pick any guitar you like under $170"... (or if there's no way to go to the actuall store... then shop on-line,...too bad she can't touch the thing, but at least the look of it....)
So she picks the guitar...., you pick the amp (since you know what's good in that area :))...
and at the end, what's important IS that you feel sort of good about the whole thing, and she actually get the guitar which she at least liked as she was picking it... so chances are she will like it more and actually may PLAY IT !!!!!...
And at the end you'll still be a GOOD BRO! :D
**********
In general most (if not all) starter guitars are pretty much the same, but what's important IS THIS: who ever is going to be a starter-player gotta LIKE it to begin with... even if it's only about the look of it. If your sister get more serious into playing guitar...then she'll take care of her leter needs on her own ;)

NOW! do what ever you do but DO NOT buy Behringer guitar for your sister. Don't do it, damn it :p . And I am absolutely NOT a Behringer-basher (trast me on this one :) ), but Behringer has absolutely NO-F*ng business in guitar making - period. I can go on about what do I mean here and why I said so...., but it would be not to the point blah blah. Just do not put you sister into potential situation, when someone may ask her: "What guitar do you play?" ...and she'll have to answer: "Behringer". .... just don't do it, for the love of God :D

/respects

ha ha.....

Well, this has been quite an interesting topic. Luckily, my sister just emailed me today and said that she won't be needing a replacement guitar, because she wouldn't have time to play it anyway. So I guess I'll just go ahead and fix up my dads old guitar....

I was talking to my brother yesterday and he said that he might give my sister his beater acoustic, so maybe she will get a guitar after all......
