Bedroom Studio & Monitor Placement

I'm looking for opinions on Monitor Placement in a bedroom studio. Right now, my desk, with the monitors on it, is in the worst possible position (off center, in the corner, against both walls). I'm working on rearranging the room, so that I can center the desk in the room.

Should I also be trying to move the desk a few feet out into the room, to get the monitors away from the walls entirely? I know that by placing the speaker close to the wall, you're exaggerating the bass response. Do most bedroom-recordists just put 'em up against the wall and deal with it (or treat with traps, etc)? Or is it likely that there'll be a big gain by pulling the setup out a bit, and sacrificing some floor space?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
