Auditioning mics

i'm a firm believer in trying out equipment at MARS before i plunk down the moo-la. But how can you accurately judge mics in a store with only the small demo room and headphones?

If you pester them enough they might let you hear it in a different situation. I always wonder what kind of board or pre amp ALL those mics are running thoroug. Like what if they have the gain a little different on one mic as opposed to another? It's a scary thought that they could manipulate what you hear like that. But really i think that how it is set up WILL give you a good idea about what the mics really sound like cause it's not like any of us have ideal setups anyway!
