Audio Drop Out in Cubase VST 32v5

Greetings everyone:

I'm running Cuabse VST 32 v5 through my Mac G4 and I've never had problems with audio drop out during recording.
Currently, I have about 22 tracks with various guitars, keyboards, etc. and I'm trying to record four tracks of drums, but whenever I hit record and play, the audio drops out at various points for about two to three seconds. I keep playing and the damn thing records.
What is causing the audio drop out? I've record songs with more tracks and didn't seem to have a problem.
I'm recording everything dry at this point without any effects so its not draining my CPU, (I don't believe).
Then, to top it off ... I'm having latency problems. The drums record way behind the other instruments.
I've never been off beat in my life. (Okay, maybe after a few beers).
As you can guess, I'm a newbie at recording and need help!

1) try defragging your hard drive,

2) try turning off tracks you don't need to hear, or

3) make a combined track for scratch tracking purposes - then you can shut everything else off;

4) try killing your fx processes while you record - they can suck up brainpower;

5) drink until you don't notice it anymore...:D

Good luck.

You might want to post some system specs, although I am no Mac genius.

Are you using two hard drives, one for reading from and the other for writing to?
