any idea's?

Just out of curiosity, is it posible for someone to make there own vst with samples they have recorded, without all the fancy little knobs that the bought vsti's come with?
I want to make my own lm-7/lm-4 kinda thing. How would I make a midi note trigger a wav sound somewhere on my computer?... any idea's?
I know how to make new drum maps... but that only changes the keys.
