I don't know anybody personally who is trying to 'sound like' artists you've mentioned, but I know the guy who was(is) seriously into "recreating" sound of 70s dub-reggae, and has done amazingly well out of his small studio. To achive the goal, He would use specificly and strictly the very same equipment and most recording and production techniques as it was back in 70s. TEAC A-3340 4-track is the machine
!..as well as other recording equipment and effects, like fisher k-10, tape delay, tubes everywhere yada yada -
etc...
I also know that He moved to LA from his home-nest and I'd guess now he works in "bigger spot" producing reggae for masses .... so I would not be surprised that Pro-Tools-Predator is chewing on his last bone and ready to swallow his soul by now
...but I don't really know what exactly he's up to at the moment, have not spoken for a while.
anyhow, his site is here:
http://www.solomon-jabby.com
You see there the menue on the left, - click 'mp-trees' from menue. This will take you the one of his albums page ( maybe this link will take you there directly:
http://www.audiolunchbox.com/album?a=20959 ), there you can click play (special player like thing above the tracks lising)... and this will automatically stream mp3-clips of the tracks.... you gotta hear it. His stuff really DOES sound like you turn on the radio some time in early 70s ... it's a time machine effect
