amp question?

I live in a small studio and my neighbors hate my music...

I need an amp for my djing equipment, but nothing huge..
What kind of amps can I get to connect to my studio monitors, something decent, not a powerful amp.
What exactly is a pre amp? can that work?

A preamp is a totally different thing. Many topics on that already in here, do a search, you'll find tons of info.

I'd go the no-amp route all the way, and look for active monitors, but if you already have decent passive monitors, I guess you have to use an amp. Nothing bad about that, I just try to keep stuff as easy as possible. Can't recommend anything for that reason.

Check into and amp modeling pre-amp, like the Behringer V-AMP, Line 6 POD or Vox Tonelab. That sounds like it fit the situation you are describing.
