i have recorded from cassette[yamaha mt120]to audacity.
can i add extra tracks[vocals] using audacity?
[again] the file is complete and i would like to layer extra vocals.
is there free software for this or do i need to spend money?
windows sound recorder can not perform this function.

Audacity can deffinately do it, but I don't have my old PC in front of me to go in and try it to tell you how. It will be more a matter of how will you digitize the sound into your computer, cause you will have to do that first off. It can do it for sure though, I have had upwards of 20 racks running o it, and that was with crappy hardware, and just my onboard soundcard. You may have to play with some setup stuff witihn audacity, but it should let you add the tracks.

actually, windows sound recorder can but it's a pain in the ass to do. i've done it. :D if you really want to beat your self up, i'll give you the instructions on how to use sound recorder for overdubbing.

audacity can do it. you need to create new tracks, assign the inputs and outputs for each track, arm them for recording, and go at it.

reaper is an excellent piece of software to check out. it's free to try and if you like it, you're expected to pay the low license fee.
