?? about computer speaker output on recording

I'm a relative newcomer at computer recording and I have an issue. I'm recording guitar tracks with my computer using Cakewalk Music Creator. My problem is that when I record, I can barely hear through my computer speakers. If I set the recording level meters too high, I get clipping. Is there a way I can get a decent sound out of my computer speakers while recording? Right now, I can barely hear the sound coming(even with the speaker volume all the way up) if I want to record something without clipping or buzzing. I've got a brand new Dell.

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

Are you using an on-board sound card or a separate one?

Most soundcards will have a control panel of some sort to allow you to adjust the output to your speakers. That's where I suspect the problem lies, not with the input.

Thanks BluesMeister, I did find the input volume was originally about halfway which did make a difference. It is loud enough to hear now. Thanks for your insight.
