Coming in late, and I'm pretty new but thought it worth mentioning that I've recorded boxy sounding vocals and good sounding vocals using the same mic in the same non-boxy room (living room with vaulted ceiling).
Difference I think was EQ settings on the mixer going into the recorder. Additional EQ in post-tracking Reaper helps un-box the poor sound. And, as I've read, mics vary so perhaps changing mics would make a difference too.
I also recommend doing the experiment to deliberately cause clipping when doing a non-vital recording just so you know why this is so important. Yes, I'm telling you to touch the hot stove - go ahead, it'll only hurt once You will go to great lengths to avoid doing that again forever.
