+4dB to -10dB

I want to use the xlr 'mix outs' from my old +4dB soundcraft mixer to a philips reel to reel recorder. Tried it direct but the signal sounds low, distorted and strange. Is this because of the dB difference, I assume as the philips has rca that it is -10dB. Is there a way around this? Thanks!!!

The signal shouldn't be low, distorted possibly, but it should be 11db louder. What kind of adapter were you using? If it was something that mixes the hot and cold pins, you should get a completely cancelled signal.

I would try a different cable. If that doesn't work, test the ins and outs of each thing.
