3d space in mixes

Hi folks,

I thought I would throw this question out, as I can't seem to figure out how it works inspite of a good deal of reading. The question is:

What are some techniques that can be used to place a track "vertically" in a mix?

That is to say, in a pop arrangement, bass, kick and vocals are commonly panned in the center. I am down with the idea of using panning to make space (right or left)in a mix, and can see the use of delay/reverb to move tracks back and forth in the mix, but am at a loss as to how the vertical (up and down) placement is done. It seems like there alot of stuff going on dead center, and I've seen it discussed, but I just don't get it.
