-10 db pad

Im hearing that one of these are often incorporated in a LD condenser mic. Also hear they are used when micing loud sources.

Can I still use my V67 close (12") to a cranked guitar amp without one?

Are there external pads available?

Do I really need one? Can I just turn mic gain down to non-clipping levels?

What sound difference do they make?

Thanks guys!

There are external attenuators available and they're quite usful but the -10 switch you see on condensor mics (and some dynamics) is between the capsule and it's internal preamp to prevent overloading that amp. Padding externally or turning down pre amp gain won't help in that situation.
