    The case for Analog

Many of us are in the process of archiving analog tape recordings and baking tapes before transfering to whatever long-term storage medium we decide is best. I use a food dehydrator for baking sticky-shed tapes as has been suggested in this forum. Thanks guys! Analog tape is a proven storage...

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

Sounds like many of us are and will be archiving to CD-R. It's hard to know how long they will last. Thankfully better technologies are emerging. For instance this year Kodak launched a Preservation range of CDs and DVDs that incorporate 24-Karet gold and under testing have shown to withstand...

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

Okay so what is the life cycle of a DAT tape drive? Should we all be storing our wav files on DAT (digital audio tape) for the long term?

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

Right, analog tape is a proven long-term storage medium. So it sounds like the best thing to do at this time is bake the sticky shed tapes and transfer to good quality tape again plus make wav files. Hopefully it won't be too long before a reliable and durable storage medium comes along for...

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

:D thanks The National Archives is using magnetic tape for long-term audio storage? Let me put it this way......if you were going to put all of your recordings in a time capsule inside a cave to last 1000 yrs time, what storage media would you use at this time? Transcribe to scrolls? :)

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

That's a good point.....no degradation whatsoever. But having to transfer every 5-10yrs for a large collection of audio files is time consuming! Right now I am storing all wav files on my hard drive and not using discs. Is there a better alternative at this point in time?

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

Mad, You have vast experience with archiving. I am participating in a long-term audio restoration process involving baking magnetic tapes and tranferring to digital sound files as many of us are doing. Given the extremely limited lifespan of both CDRs and HHDs I sometimes wonder if we should be...

Is a wav file eternal? What is your digital archiving strategy?

Right, but doesn't it seem that digital objects are actually quite fragile because they can be so easily manipulated? Also many of us are storing our precious recordings on burned cds which have a very limited life-span depending on how they are stored. Naturally we will be always migrating to...

After you made the transfers did you then store the masters in a refridgerator or did you dispose of the them?

    Shamrock recording tape

Thanks, I always clean the tape path after every transfer. How about storage? Do these tapes need to be stored in a metal canister? What procedures need to be followed? Circulation? I am researching this right now.

    Shamrock recording tape

Looks like I have several old tapes with "vinegar syndrome". I am reading some articles on it. This ain't no fun at all. Does anybody know if this will infect my tape machine? I have separated these tapes from my collection and I was successful at making one transfer already. Today I am going to...

metal reel Is it ok to bake a tape in the "heads-out" rewound position on a plastic reel? I wouldn't want to try to transfer a "sticky shed" tape to a metal reel.

    Shamrock recording tape

 hows-a-bout a vinegar syndrome/sticky shed combo in the same tape pack? Guess we all don't have to worry about that one eh:) Is it true that there wasn't much problem with binder degradation in the 50's and 60's?
