You might even go so far as to getting a practice pad and some sticks, and do some basic snare drum exercises. This approach has helped immensely for a singer friend of mine.

Maybe try an overdrive pedal? It is hard to say without knowing what sound you're going for. FWIW, scrubs' answer is the best, but if you're limited in funds, there may not be much you could do except wait, or try out pedals. Still, if you can at all, save up for a good amp.

If you're looking to be able to play complex chords with some distortion, you might want to try an overdrive pedal, or something like that. In my experience, it really keeps the definition there, but you still get some pretty good crunch to it. $0.02 :D

I would say just go try some out with your bass, different people will like different distortion tones on the bass. I like the Big Muff for bass distortion. I would definitely take Scrub's advice and have a clean tone in there as well, or even try something with a crossover and just distort...

I love the blues stuff. Maybe not so much the real "true" southern blues (although I still enjoy it some), but stuff like Stevie Ray really appeals to me. You could say maybe just blues-rock is more what I like.

I think that the biggest argument against recording direct in with a distortion pedal usually involves a signal chain like this: guitar----->pedal------>mixer/recorder/audio interface and that will pretty much always suck, IMO. I think that having the V-AMP in there will help a bunch compared...
