Help me pick a budget bass amp

I agree with witzendoz. You are going to need at least 300 watts and a something like a 4x10. Go used!!! Your best bet is to look for an old Peavey rig on craigslist or even ebay.

Great call on Carol. She is way high on that list of greats. Her body of work is stunning. Here's a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Kaye

Do you use a pick to play bass?

Chris Squire!!!I am a huge fan of this old punk rocker.:D Roundabout is so hard core!!! All kidding aside for the life of me I can't play with a pick. Wish I could but it's too awkward for me. I'm fine with one a guitar though.

mexican vs. american geddy lee jazz bass

I could be wrong but I believe the Geddy Lee signature is made in Japan. No mim or American versions.

    Clean combo amp suggestions

I have to agree with the Cube. Roland also made the VGA series of amps that were really nice. I've used a friends VGA-5 quite a bit and loved it. You can find them used fairly often at a good price.

    GFS Humbuckers

Yeah I figured out that the 90's were single coils. I ended up going with the Dream 180's in Gold Pearl basically because I wanted to avoid any hum issues. I hope they sound as described. They sure are pretty though.

    GFS Humbuckers

Thanks Roguetitan, that's the info I'm looking for. From the descriptions I was actually leaning towards one of the 90's Mean or Dream. The 180's look interesting as do the Bigmouths. I guess I'm gonna role the dice with one of the 4. Here's the test subject BTW. It actually looks nicer in...

    GFS Humbuckers

I just bought a an inexpensive guitar off Craig's list. Overall I like it but I want to change the pu's. GFS seems like an affordable option. Can anyone recommend one of their humbuckers? I'm looking for something with a classic Gibsonish rock sound.

"Jazz" bass - okay for any type of music?

Squier aint what it used to be!!! Those VM Squier's are excellent. Also IMHO even better are the Squier Classic Vibe series instruments. Better than a mim Fender? Maybe, maybe not. At that price level it's a crap shoot. If you're a wood snob, the edge goes to the mim which are made of alder. The...

    Bass Amps

Why not go with a Traynor/Yorkvile? They're a Canadian company. Maybe you could find a deal? I've heard nothing but good things about them. I know a guy who plays through a Traynor YBA200. That thing is pure sex!!! Out of your price range but it put them on my short list for when I go looking...

anyone with exp with a: Tech 21 DD3X Double Drive 3X Pedal?

I can't comment on the DD3X but Tech 21 stuff pretty much as a rule is built to last. You could probably drive nails with some of their pedals. Fletch

    Ibanez or Fender

If the Fender is in good shape I'd go with that one no question.

Running solid state amp w/ no load

I do this all the time with one of my amps at home. Make sure you don't send phantom power to it though. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be good.

    Most technical instrumental album

I immediately thought of the Vital Tech Tones when I saw this thread and along the same lines Vital Information with Frank Gambale who's a pretty technical player in my book.

    newbie plugin question

This is a great freebie http://www.emu.com/promo/proteusvx/welcome.asp You have to sign up for the news letter but you can instantly unsubscribe. It took a little fiddling around to figure it out but I think it sounds pretty good. Fletch

    Bass: P vs. J

On a similar note. I just scored a MIJ Jazz Special at a local pawn shop for less than $200. It's a PJ with a jazz neck. Passive though with no pick guard. They've been reissued as the Duff McKagan signature. Great bass!!! Fletch

    Bass: P vs. J

Me over thinking:D I guess I should have used quotation marks in my post. Only the 1rst sentence or 2 were my thoughts. The rest was a quote from Ed Friedland, former Senior Editor Bass Guitar magazine and all around super bass scholar. Me I just like basses. All of them!!! BTW. All bass...
