    Prostituting your work.

At risk of sounding horribly arrogant. The known band connections are probably a big part of what does it. That said, in the UK we're not that big a community, so making friends with lots of musicians and helping out "a wee demo here" a wee keys part there" gets you known as a good guy and...

    Prostituting your work.

Hey nice thread. I know how you feel brother (this is me!!) I think though, you need to realise just how lucky you are. At 35+ you have the maturity and skill to write some really good material and actually "say something" in your work. when I think of stuff I wrote when I was going to be the...

    What laptop could handle this?

I would think the newish Mac G4 1.xxG processor with 1.xx of ram would work fine. I produced a whole album (mostly.....) on a G4 667mhz with 1G ram last year. Track counts went up to 20's Its done alright too. The album..not the computer which has been eaten by my 2yr old! All the best Iain

    The ultimate use of space

I had to get this wee idea out. This converts any room in the house to a live room or an iso booth or whatever. My bro and I were looking to use our home studio to record a band...they like to play live and we wanted a big live room. Our studio space is in his (quite sizeable loft) all of the...

    Wee song lyric for comments

Hey, thanks chaps. The critic is so welcome. I am engaged in the vagaries of protools to bounce this wee thing to MP3. (It is sung with a scottish accent..cause that's all I can do and it is fairly straightish folkandroll, because that's.......) As an aside...why is it that I can take other...

    Wee song lyric for comments

Those who know, know that I DO NOT DO LYRICS, tunes, guitaring, singing but not lyrics. I have decided that I'm going to try. This is about a band I play with. It is all true......................... "Bogle rides again" Living room wannabee rock an roll band a silver haired daddy with a...

Has anyone used a MOTU 828 and a Tascam 428 together?

No problem dude. If you're doing the band thing we've found that the following worked well for us: 4 mikes on the drums (BD, Snare, highhat, overheads) - spend a lot of time getting this right and you are laughing. 1 guitar through "pod" - DI to 828 1 guitar through "pod" - DI to 828 1 Bass...

Has anyone used a MOTU 828 and a Tascam 428 together?

Exactly the set up in my project studio. The slickest (but ugliest and least artist friendly) version of this was: Powerbook 667mhz, 786ram, Lacie firewire HD, 828 and US428. Excellent automation of Cubase SX1/Reason combination. Used primarily VI's + heaps of audio (around 28 tracks...bear in...

Making the best of a bad job

Thanks guys The whole sorry affair is that the initial recordings were of specific events that were unique to the time and place. I think my main frustration is that client had an idea, did the groundwork without seeking advice of any kind then presents the results to ourselves as a "make this...

Making the best of a bad job

Long time no post chaps, sorry. Wee problem. My bro and I are engaged in recording and writing music to accompany recorded spoken word. The music bit is kind of "what we do" (so no great problems there..which can't be fixed by rehearsal and scales!!) The problem is the digital audio "spoken...

Does anyone write christian based songs?

Now, I am a christian. I have played in a christian band for many years. I think it's all about the "anointing of the song/musicians" basically. When it comes down to it....you know when the spirit is in what you are doing. At these points I have no difficulty in zoning out the music. There...

Does anyone write christian based songs?

Christian songwriters can, however, be really thick and send of 3 emails when they meant to send one. Iain

Does anyone write christian based songs?

Oh what nonsense. I have and will continue to write songs which express my world veiw. Basically this will inevitably result in some of my songs being about faith and my beliefs/struggles, I also write about loads of other things - including mainstream pop....why ..... because it pays the...

    Writers block...aargh

you know..I was reading through this wee post...an' I'm thinking..how incredibly lucky we all are to have something as powerfull as musical talent and through that the opportunity to have these kinds of experiences. It's easy to bitch about the bad day in the studio, the crap session, the day...

    *sad face* songwriting troubles...

Yup. get exactly what you are talking about all the time. I actually find it quite fun, i'll sing nonsense, just words that sing nicely. You'd be amazed what the subconscious will dredge up and often it's really good...or someone elses. This is one of the ways I write...I'll change a lyric 7...

    Favorite lyricists and why.

Yeh, Justin is good. He also sings beautifully. There's a lot of tongue in cheek stuff and a very "glasgow" sense of humour. My fave line is "Stone cold sober, lookin' for bottles of love" I miss Del Amitri. Iain
