The Migration to Win 11 begins

I get what you're saying. I retired just a couple years ago from the cad/cam engineering world as an NC programmer. Every year we dealt with software/hardware hurdles. And then even in my home and music life I was building pc's (as most of us did). I did my stint with OS/2 and Linux. But to me...

The Migration to Win 11 begins

After reading thru this thread, we should be reminded that computer technology does not really look back. I too hung on to my old system for longer than I should have. My little I7 w/16gb ram and a 500mg SSD in a small box is light years ahead of my decade old I5 full size PC that I spent a ton...

    Processor gurus: i5-2500K w/32Gb or i7-4700MQ w/16Gb?

While I can't comment on Pro Tools resource needs... I think one doesn't need to "build" workstation level machines anymore if it's mainly for like you say a few tracks. An I7 11390h with16gb in a small compact box (plus an additional bu drive) is what I'm using for Reaper now. Love it.

    3/4 guitar with Nashville Strings

High stringing my crappy old Ovation Audition (with it's famously cracked repaired deck) gave it new life!

    Reaper 7.001 released Oct 16th 2023

I always say, of all the music gear I've spent on over the years... Reaper has been the BEST bang for the buck.

Windows Pro vs Home for your DAW

Kinda what I thought. I just retired my old system and just got my new one up and running. If there's no performance increase... I'm done.

Windows Pro vs Home for your DAW

I've been using Win Home for a long time. But am upgrading my wife's pc to it for it's remote desktop built in to link with a couple clients she has. Any reason to upgrade my DAW as well?

    Mini Windows Computers As DAWs

I'm setting up the one I just got yesterday. It's the same specs as your brothers. Its an Acemagic. I think they are probably from the same supplier. My old I5 pc of a decade finally gave up the ghost. Have not installed Reaper on it yet. Forget just how much installing and setting up I had to...

Non Drummer Songwriters Using EZDrummer 3 "Bandmate" Info...

Hmm... I get that. I found a couple vids where you can drag it to search window and then go thru your libraries (and I have a few) for more matches. I know they give us these "fine tuning" options as well. But again, that's where I fail as a non drummer. Maybe if they do another $99 sale I will...

Non Drummer Songwriters Using EZDrummer 3 "Bandmate" Info...

Didn't think about upgrading to ED3 until I saw the demo on the Bandmate function. As a non drummer... one of the toughest things has been using the needle in the haystack search function for drum beats. And for me the Tap-2-Find function has been weak given my chopsticks skill level finger...

Hot Rod Deluxe IV vs Peavey Rage158 home recording

Rocky Mountain Way was famously recorded with the Champ (though not SS but tubes). I still have mine for this very reason: I have a bedroom studio. One other little gem I keep around is my now discontinued Tech 21 Trademark 10 SS modeling amp for this same reason. They both sound great in small...

'The Box' and me are not friends

While I think you sorted this out... You offer a tail of truth that MANY of us struggle with: Variables. We just want to make music. Yet, in this thread alone we discussed software issues, swapping motherboards, interface issues, storage issues, real faders and knobs vs virtual ones... Add to...

Is Anyone Using a Rack PC?

I looked at those and asked the question here a ways back. For price and performance I think the old box config wins out. Also pointed out to me on this forum was cooling... Racks tend to not run as cool as boxes (or so I was told)...

    Writing someone else's song?

Idle mind here... It was Jason Isbell who once said he runs his lyrics thru the "Cliche Meter" (his wife). <ggg> But for my simple ears, I get a little nervous if a friend of mine says "that sounds like xxx". I know they mean it in a good way. But it gives me pause the times I've heard that...

Roland JC-120, should I get it?

Wow... A JC-120 thread... I had one from the late 80's thru the 90's. Clean and loud. I used a Boss DS-1 or a SD-1 thru it for distortion. Fine for 80's sounds. But then I slipped into blues... I think depending on the pedal, the JC is a nice platform. Just not for me... But that chorus! If you...
