Tascam Porta Two HS - Repair story and test recording

Sorry, I missed this post. I never did see the amp again. I imagine it was likely sold for drug money or something. What's crazy is that he even built a matching external cab for it because he said he was feeling so bad about it taking so long. At least, I think he built it. He showed me the...

Question about arranging: Keyboards and power chords?

This may be a stupid question, but, as a guitarist (predominantly) I've always wondered about it. So many 80s songs, for example, featured guitars and keys, and often times the guitars were just playing power chords (i.e., root and 5th only - no 3rd). When this is going on, what are the keys...

    New song called......"The Reason"

I'll preface this by saying this is not really my genre. I really don't like auto-tuned vocals (sick to death of them) and super clean/everything-on-the-grid production. But, obviously, a lot of people do like that, so .... I think it sounds really good overall. As it stands, I could see this...

What EQ settings should I set my amp to for a 50's-60's Rock tone?

In general, I'd say err on the side of less gain than you think. I hear people playing those 50s/early 60s songs with WAY too much gain, and it just doesn't have the same punch or impact.

    The "Holy Sh*t" Moment

I had a reissue for about 10 years. I liked it, but I've never played a vintage one, so I have no reference.

    The "Holy Sh*t" Moment

I'm curious if every guitar player has this ... what I call the "holy sh*t" moment. Here's my story. I started playing guitar at 14 (1985 I think) on a borrowed Peavey T-15, which had a built-in, bare bones (solid state, obviously) amp in the case. (See pic. I don't own this anymore, but this...

Step Right This Way and Lend Me Your Ears Please!

Sounds as though you've done your research! 🙂 If I ever take the 163x out of the rack, I'll be sure to snap a shot of the board. Good luck!

Step Right This Way and Lend Me Your Ears Please!

Hi there. I'm really sorry, but unfortunately, I don't have those files anymore. That was 9 years ago and several computers since then. 😕

"Shade Fails" - Rock tune in progress

Hey y'all, I just finished all the guitars last night for one of two full songs that will appear at the end of a DIY Home Recording book and wanted to get opinions. The only thing that’s left on this is the vocals and then the mix. This one’s just an all-out, bare-bones rock tune (I was...

Been a long time...a couple new mixes (indie rock type music)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing; it wouldn't sound as good to me if you played F there, because the melodic theme would be compromised. And that's what's driving the musical phrase at that point, IMO.

Been a long time...a couple new mixes (indie rock type music)

Hey Nola, I just checked out the song, and yeah, that note doesn't bother me at all. As you said, it's the major 7th of the Fmaj7 chord, so there's that. But even if you were just playing an F chord instead of Fmaj7, I doubt the note would bother me. It's very pretty, and it's a...

How Were 388s Originally Shipped To Stores?

    The 688 is absolutely not heavier than a 388 - not by a long shot. 388 = 82 lbs 688 = 38 lbs

    New Beatles track

I wasn't talking about solo outings on the album. I was saying that, by then (according to everything I've read on them), they weren't working in the studio together as a band much anymore. They were treating other members more like session musicians, where they would each come in on their own...

    New Beatles track

I definitely think of it as a "Beatles" song. I mean ... other than the time elapsed, it's not all that different to the way they were working by the time they got to the White Album. They were hardly ever all in the studio at the same time during that period. I think it's great, and I loved...

Balanced or unbalanced jacks on units where it doesn't specify

Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering about that - the fact that different types of jacks may be used on guitars than other pieces of equipment - but the guitar jack was the only thing I had lying around at the time (without having to open something up).

Balanced or unbalanced jacks on units where it doesn't specify

Thanks for the tip. I've tried the "number of clicks" thing before, and it doesn't seem terribly reliable to me. When testing the idea, I plugged TRS cables into known (properly working) balanced 1/4" jacks, and sometimes the two "clicks" are easily discernible, and other times pretty much only...

Balanced or unbalanced jacks on units where it doesn't specify

Thanks for the response. I'm a little confused still. First of all, not to be picky, but when you said this: Did you mean to say "are one piece of metal?" (I'm not trying to be difficult, but I just want to understand.) If so, I don't know what you mean. They're separated by a band, right...
