Is FireWire the way to go?

Firewire vs. USB2: Pepsi vs. Coke, Burger King vs. McDonalds, Oranges, vs. Apples... Basically, its all about personal preference. Although some manufacturers, such as MOTU, use Firewire cables for their proprietary PCI AD/DA systems. These systems can offer less latency than traditional...

Preap with ADAT out into Projectmix I/O ADAT Lightpipe?

Should be able to do it. Just make sure that your clock source is set to the Projectmix I/O and not the D8.

8 channel preamp, with OUTPUT lightpipe, to use as stand alone pre converter and DAW

Which MOTU unit are you referring to? Is it the 2408mkIII? Might also want to look at the Focusrite OctoPre mkII or the Behringer ADA8000.

Advice on Recording Computer and Interface

My recommendations: Computer: Stick with the Mac Mini, especially if you're going to be using Pro Tools. I would only go the Windows route if you know specifically what hardware you want to be using and if you know how to configure Windows properly to run with your DAW without any hiccups...

    All-around studio headphones.

The Sony MD 7506's are also worth checking out although they do not have nearly as good noise cancellation as the HD280s. headphone.com has a great feature on its site where you can compare the frequency graphs of various headphones. Definitely worth checking out.

    new session singers second cut

The guitar in the beginning is noticeably out of tempo with the sleigh bells and the shaker. Way too much sub-low-end in the bass and not enough of the mid-range (100-500hz). I would throw in a hi-pass at around 40hz. Bit of quantization on the string synth but that could be from the overall...

X-Y Overheads: Am I doing this "properly"?

I would stay away from stereo mic techniques on drums unless it's for jazz.

How to get a wide vocal sound in mixing?

Using a doubler plugin might also come in handy.

    My Little Box of Wires

The cymbals definitely need to be brought back down in the mix. I would also bring the snare up a tad and maybe add a little mono small room reverb to give it more body. Kick drum feels like it's missing a good chunk of low end. I would try adding a 3db at and below 125hz. Solid tune...

    Processor adivce asap...

I don't think that's necessarily the case. The motherboard in my studio PC will be turning 5 in July, along with the Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU that I bought for it. When it was purchased it was in the top of its product line, and it performs at the same level as my 2011 MacBook Pro. Sure the...

I'd really like to record outside.

I thought the idea of recording outside not to long ago. Seems like a unique concept. Just make sure you bring an extra-long extension cord:listeningmusic:

    "Beautiful Ashes" - feedback wanted

the crash cymbals are either over-compressed or need to be brought up level wise. If you could get them to "pop" out in the mix so that they create dynamic contrast it would make the mix more interesting. I would add more compression to the vocals and bring the vocals down so that it sits...

    Mixing Tools

I agree Gonzo. eq and compression won't do shit for you unless you a.) know how to use them on a technical level and b.) know how to apply them and make them adapt to various styles of music.

Converting from PC to Mac - DAW considerations

There really is no difference between Mac and PC these days. It really just boils down to "Do I like how the GUI looks?" or "Should I buy a Mac just for the sake of having one." But since you're already committed to the switch I'd recommend you go with Pro Tools only because it's an industry...

1st three finished songs on upcoming album

It was done that way for a reason. I wanted to enhance the contrast between the loud and quiet sections. Sometimes similar pan positions bore me. Here's a re-upload of Wage Peace. Hopefully it's louder this time.

1st three finished songs on upcoming album

This is the first batch of songs I mixed for my band's upcoming album, "Civil Disobedience". I have already posted Wage Peace here before under a thread titled "Is this ready for mastering?" but this time I made some changes to the bass track so it sits a more comfortably in the mix. I've been...

    Is this ready for mastering?

Couple of notes: First, thanks guys so much for the suggestions. I've found all of it to be very informative and helpful. Next, about the guitar. I tracked the guitar by micing the amp and our guitarist always uses reverb. At that time I didn't think the amount of reverb was too wet so I...

    Is this ready for mastering?

double tracking the guitar is not really an option for me because pretty much everyone in the band went off to college including myself. I had to do this mix with sony 7506 headphones and I only tested the mix on my Samsung home theater system that I have in my dorm.

    Is this ready for mastering?

We're alternative. We do a bunch of stuff. I don't know how to describe it other than we sound like Dave Matthews Band.

    Is this ready for mastering?

I need a second opinion on if this mix is tight enough to be considered final. It's for my band's upcoming album which will (hopefully) be coming out at the end of February. We do a lot of reggae kinda stuff and I was really trying to bring that out in this song. Hope you guys like it.
